I think Tomas hit Alonso because he wanted to let out his frustrations on someone but he didn't want to hurt the little kids. Tomas was probably sad and maybe Alonso reminded him of Magda and it was really painful for him to see Alonso everyday.

I believe Tomas hit Alonso because we was upset and enraged that Madga was dead. He felt that Alonso was suppose to protect her and in a sense he probably felt that he failed in protecting her as well. Alonso was also the oldest which may made Tomas feel justified in hitting him not the younger children.
The reason I think that Tomas hit Alonso is that he was depressed and troubled from the death of his wife, Magda. Since Alonso was the oldest of his siblings, Tomas might have felt that it was the responsibility of Alonso to take care of Magda and keep her safe (since there were death threat letters to Magda)and now she was dead.
